Our Town Hall, Manchester

Posted on 31st May 2019 by Jane Simpson

The Grade I listed Town Hall building consists of a complex series of interlocking decorated spaces on a restricted city centre site.

The challenge was how to position modern-day facilities and services into this elaborate existing building. Jane Simpson Access (JSA) are the inclusion client advisor to Manchester City Council. Jane working alongside the client and design team ensuring that equality and access for all users and visitors is not compromised. Our role is to:

  • Assist in the coordination and facilitation of consultation events at key points in the process
  • Act as a critical friend and provide scrutiny to design proposals at the end of key RIBA design stages, incorporating feedback from consultation events
  • Apply existing information and knowledge obtained from earlier consultation and involvement of disabled people over recent years

The immediate concern within this building was achieving access to all levels and I particular access to all public entry points. Client: Manchester City Council Project Value: £300M
